Water Decontamination Tips and Tricks
Access to clean drinking water is critical for survival. Here are some techniques to purify water in the wild.
Boiling
Boiling water is the simplest and most effective way to kill pathogens. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute (or 3 minutes at higher altitudes) to ensure it's safe to drink.
Filtration
Portable water filters can remove bacteria and protozoa. Look for filters that meet the EPA standard for microbiological water purifiers.
Chemical Treatment
Using iodine tablets or chlorine drops is another way to disinfect water. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure safety.
Solar Disinfection (SODIS)
In sunny climates, you can use solar disinfection by filling a clear plastic bottle with water and placing it in direct sunlight for 6-12 hours. The UV rays and heat work together to kill harmful microorganisms.
Natural Filtering Methods
If you have no equipment, you can create a makeshift filter using sand, gravel, and charcoal. While this won't purify the water completely, it can reduce sediment and some pathogens.
